Winter Driving Tips – Are You Prepared?

Winter weather has been a long time coming to the UK this year but, don’t doubt it, it is coming!  We all dread the cold temperatures, sleet and snow and having to defrost the car.

Don’t compound the misery by getting caught unprepared.  Now is the time to take your car in for a service and have everything checked.

Some of the most common winter problems will quickly show up and cause major inconvenience if there is wear and tear with any of the following:

The battery, cooling system/anti-freeze, hoses and belts. Check tyres for tread depth and signs of uneven wear.  Check tyre pressures and make sure  the spare is in good condition.  Check wipers and replace if worn.  Make sure the rear-screen and car heaters are working.  Top up screen wash.  Check headlights are aligned and working.

If you (or family members) have never changed a flat tyre do a trial run so that you all know how.  Carrying emergency supplies could literally be a lifesaver, so here are a few suggestions:

  • Windscreen scraper and lock and windscreen de-icer
  • Jumper cables
  • Torch (hand-chargeable preferably)
  • Portable radio (or rechargeable torch/radio combo)
  • Mobile phone charger
  • Towrope
  • Tools
  • Blanket/sleeping bag/duvet
  • Emergency food and drink
  • Change of clothes
  • Waterproof poncho/rain gear and boots
  • Even if you have a sat-nav, carry a road map and compass
  • Reflective jacket and warning triangles
  • First-Aid Kit
  • Small shovel
  • Old sacks or blankets (for tyre traction in case stuck in snow or mud)

Don’t drive without clearing your screens properly, or by just clearing a circle to see through!  Driving a car considered to be in a dangerous condition could result in being pulled over and a fine and points.
