U.S. Visas Now Available for HIV/AIDS Visitors

Just a reminder that, as of 4 January, 2010, HIV infection has been removed from the list of communicable diseases which previously barred entry to the U.S.

Those with the infection who have previously been unable to travel to the U.S. can now do so, provided they are otherwise eligible and obtain the necessary visa or travel authorisation.

Travellers with HIV/AIDS wishing to enter the U.S. under the Visa-Waiver Programme must comply with the mandatory ESTA rules (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation).  Registration for ESTA must be made at least 72 hours prior to travel (failure to obtain the authorisation will result in refusal of entry to the U.S.)  To quality under ESTA for online registration, you also must possess an electronic passport (e-Passport).   The ESTA authorisation is free at present and travellers are cautioned to avoid websites advertising the service for a fee.

Note that travellers to the U.S. are still required to provide their airline or carrier with passport details, including country of residence and address for their first night’s stay.  Because of enhanced security for international flights to the U.S. travellers are advised to allow additional time - at least one extra hour above the normal.

Also (sorry) but a reminder that it is sheer craziness to risk travel to the U.S. without travel insurance (ours or anyone else’s!)  If you should have an accident or need emergency medical treatment the costs can be staggering.  Backpackers and those travelling light can save money by taking out a Backpacker policy.

For more information visit our Travel Guide for the United States and follow the link for the Foreign Office (FCO) ‘Know Before You Go’ campaign for updated and important travel advice, as well as links for ESTA and other important information.

Also, it should go without saying that you should never make any flippant or ‘funny’ remarks about terrorism or references to bombs when being processed through airports.  The authorities will definitely not get the joke!
