Madeira – Advice for Visitors Following Flash Floods
The recent horrifying flash floods and landslides on Madeira are now reported to have taken more than 40 lives and left more than 120 injured. The death toll may continue to rise as an unconfirmed number of people are still feared missing.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London is (at the time of writing) reported to be investigating whether a British national may be missing. A few injured Britons have also received treatment in local hospitals.
Family or friends concerned about British Nationals on Madeira should phone the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London on: 020 7008 1500.
The airport is reported to be operating normally again, but transportation on the island is affected in some areas, with many bridges and roads washed out. Water, power and communications have also been affected in some areas and there may be problems making phone calls to parts of Madeira.
Rescue and clean up operations are still in progress, so those with plans to travel to Madeira are advised to contact their airline or travel company for updates and advice before leaving home.
Visit our travel guide to Portugal (and Madeira) and follow the FCO link for important updates and travel advice from the FCO and their ‘Know Before You Go’ campaign.
It is important to take out travel insurance for your trips before leaving home. Obtain a low cost quote.
