German F1 Grand Prix

This week the F1 teams are gearing up for the German Grand Prix, which takes place from 23-25 July 2010.

The event is officially the ‘Formula 1 Grosser Preis Santander Von Deutschland 2010’.  The venue is the circuit at Hockenheim – which is the home circuit of racing legend Michael Schumacher.  The Grand Prix race will encompass 67 laps of the 4.57 km (approx. 2.84 miles) circuit.

Fans flying out for the Grand Prix will probably fly into Frankfurt, which is the closest airport, or Stuttgart. Coaches run to surrounding towns such as Heidelberg and Hockenheim.  The nearest rail stations are at Heidelberg and Schwetzingen.

Hockenheim also has a motorsport museum, which is bound to be of interest to enthusiasts with time to spare.  Hockenheim was sadly the place where racing legend Jim Clark met his end in 1968.

According to the weather forecast it looks likely to be hot, so fans should remember to pack plenty of sunscreen, as well as cool clothing and hat and sunglasses.  Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Visit our Travel Guide to Germany and follow the link for the Foreign Office (FCO) for important travel advice and updates.  This is especially important if you plan to drive in Germany.  Check that you have current UK/European Breakdown Cover in place – click here for a quote

The FCO advice also includes a warning about possessing counterfeit money, plus you should always carry your passport as the police in Germany have the right to ask to see your ID.  British citizens and those holding EU passports do not need a visa to enter Germany.

Don’t forget to take your EHIC but this should never be used as a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance.
