Cowes Week Sailing Regatta
The Isle of Wight (off the south coast of England) is under starter’s orders, ready to host Cowes Week 2010!
The action kicks off tomorrow, 31 July, through 7 August 2010. This is the 184th season – meaning this great tradition has taken place during British summers since 1826.
More than 1,000 boats, and sailors from all walks of life, compete in dozens of races of all classes and sizes. It is a great spectator event with the racing action viewable from shore or spectator boats.
There is plenty to keep landlubbers happy too, with live music and bands, fireworks, a display by the Red Arrows, as well as great shopping, art galleries, pubs and restaurants. Pay a visit to attractions such as the Cowes Maritime Museum, and Osborne house – which was once a holiday home belonging to Queen Victoria.
The weather outlook is not bad, though they anticipate possible storms towards the end of the week. Weather in this part of the world is notoriously unpredictable though, so best to be prepared for anything.
The final Friday of Cowes Week, 6 August, is notoriously action-packed. The America’s Cup TEAMORIGIN races against America’s Cup holders BMW ORACLE Racing in the afternoon. At 1900 hrs the Red Arrows aerobatic team perform one of their breathtaking displays, followed by the traditional Fireworks Display at 2130 hrs and then more live music, fun and entertainment.
Visitors to the Isle of Wight can get there by ferry – which is easy as a foot passenger – but may be more difficult if taking a car, due to the limited parking. Helicopter services are also available! For all the information you need, visit the official Cowes Week website here.
