U.S. Travel – Visa Fee

From 8 September 2010 the U.S. government will charge visitors a fee for entry.

From the UK a fee of £9 ($14) will be payable by credit card when applying for online permission under ESTA.

So… If you have been thinking of taking a trip to the U.S. during the next couple of years, apply before 8 September and avoid the fee!

ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorisation.  It was introduced in early 2009 and became mandatory in January 2010. Once an application is approved the ESTA is valid for two years or the expiration of your passport (whichever comes first).  Those already in possession of a valid ESTA will not need to pay until they apply for renewal.

Approval under ESTA is necessary for visitors from any of the 36 countries currently approved under the ‘visa waiver’ programme (VWP).  It is recommended that visitors apply online for ESTA at least 72 hours in advance of travel.  Travellers without a valid ESTA or visa will be denied boarding on their flight to the U.S.

Passports presented for travel to the U.S. should be electronic passports (e-passports) with a valid ESTA.  Visitors holding old style passports must apply for the appropriate visa.

Travellers without internet access may have a relative, travel agent, or other third party apply for the ESTA on their behalf.  However, care must be taken as the person named on the application is responsible for all questions answered on their behalf.

For advice regarding ESTA and entry to the U.S. visit our Travel Guide to the United States and follow the link for the Foreign Office country advice. This advice is extremely important and a recommended read prior to travel.

Visitors to the U.S. with plans to be in the state of Arizona should be aware of recently enacted immigration law (29 July 2010) making it a crime for a foreign national to be in the state without proof of legal immigration status.  Therefore, visitors are advised to keep their passports with them at all times.
