Isle of Man Travel Insurance

A reminder to those planning a visit to the Isle of Man that the reciprocal healthcare agreement which has existed between the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man ceases at the end of September 2010.

Until that time, UK visitors to the Isle of Man (and vice versa) are still entitled to free emergency NHS services, but not the costs of medical repatriation.

The agreement had been scheduled to end in March 2010 but an extension was granted for six months.  Although UK visitors will still be entitled to free access to NHS services until the end of September, the extension does not include costs for medical repatriation – which could be very expensive, even just back to the UK.

UK visitors to the Isle of Man would be wise to purchase travel insurance to cover their stay – and check that the insurance includes cover for medical repatriation.  Likewise, residents of the Isle of Man should consider taking out travel insurance when visiting the UK.   Special or exceptional circumstances may apply in some cases, so for more information visit the Isle of Man government website - click here

The Isle of Man is situated between Great Britain and northern Ireland, in the Irish Sea.  The main island is called ‘Mann’ and the location of the largest town and capital of Douglas.  The Isle of Man is not part of the UK, but a self-governing British Crown Dependency with the Queen as head of state.  The population is approximately 80,000, with a large proportion residing in Douglas.

The Isle of Man includes the adjoining islands of Chicken Rock, Calf of Man, St. Patrick’s Isle and St. Michael’s Isle.  The official spoken languages are English and Manx and residents are known as Manx.  Currency is the pound sterling.   The Isle of Man is known for its offshore banking and tax-haven status, as well as the tail-less Manx cat!  Ferry services are available from several ports including Liverpool, Dublin and Belfast.
