London – Tube Strike Disruption

So much for no more bad news…

A threatened stike looks likely to affect the London Underground (rail) service next week.

For the many Brits returning to work or school after the summer holidays this will be unwelcome news indeed.

Those with flights to catch or connecting to Eurostar may need to work out alternative arrangements.

Two Underground unions are threatening action over proposed staffing changes and job cuts in ticketing offices.  If the strike goes ahead the disruption is expected to begin at about 5pm on Monday, 6 September and last until approx 10 pm on Tuesday 7 September, 2010.  If the dispute continues there are plans for more strikes in the coming months.

A massive effort is underway by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and Transport for London (TfL) to lessen the impact on commuters trying to get to work and assist others in getting around the city.

Check the current situation before travelling, avoid rush hour times if possible, and consider alternative modes of transport.  Additional buses and river boats will be laid on and volunteers will be on hand at stations to assist travellers and hand out maps and information.  Those who own a bike are encouraged to cycle to their place of work if possible.
