There is a lot you can do before you leave to help alleviate
worries while you are away.
At Home
- Make sure that all the exterior doors of your home
are equipped with good quality locks (including those to an outside
porch, balcony, garage or basement) and they are all working.
- If possible, arrange for someone to check on your home
when you're away and give them emergency contact numbers. This
will ensure that any problems are spotted quickly and appropriate
action taken.
- If possible, turn off gas, water and electricity.
- Place some of the lights inside your home on variable
timing devices to give a lived-in appearance. You can also plug
a radio in to the timer and tune it to a talk channel.
- Check your home contents insurance is up to date and
that any expensive items not covered by your travel insurance are
added onto to the policy.
- Arrange for pets to be properly looked after.
- Cancel deliveries such as milk and newspapers.
Health
- Check what vaccinations you need well in advance. If
you are unsure check with your GP. This is particularly important
for chioldren, the elderly and pregnant women.
- Before travelling long distances, give yourself a couple
of early nights to help avoid jet-lag and help your body adjust
to a new time zone.
- Ensure you have a first-aid kit and any medication
you might need. Remember to obtain a doctor's note to obtain prescription
medication if needed. An E111 form can be obtained from the Post
Office which will provide you with a certain amopunt of health
care in participating countries.

Precautions
- If you are travelling to an 'at risk' area, it is prudent
to acquire an analysis or profile of the country prior to the trip.
This knowledge can help you assess the risks and take any necessary
precautions during your stay.

- Give your travel plans, hotel details and arrival/departure
dates to at least two people you can trust.
- It is advisable to register with your own country's
consulate or embassy if staying in a foreign country for more than
a few weeks.
- When packing, do not put valuables in 'checked-in'
baggage.
- Leave your valuables at home.
- Learn about the culture, laws and customs for
the country you are visiting. This will help avoid any embarrassing
situations and make your trip more enjoyable.
