Driving Abroad

If you are taking your own vehicle make sure this is serviced before you travel and that you have headlight adjustment stickers ready.
Take a fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, tool kit, spare bulbs and warning triangle.
A 'country of residence' sticker e.g. GB, FR, NT is a legal requirement in most countries.
Tell your car insurer that you are taking your vehicle abroad and extend your policy if necessary.
Take copies of your registration and insurance documents, any emergency helpline numbers, driving licence (international driving licence if necessary), together with details of any breakdown and travel insurance.

Leave a copy at home, with a friend or relative. Take the second copy and originals away with you - keep them separate and in a safe place.
Ensure your vehicle breakdown cover covers travel abroad.
Before you go obtain road maps and familiarise yourself with road signs and general road rules of the country you are visiting.
Avoid leaving your possessions in an unattended vehicle and avoid parking in secluded, poorly lit areas.
Never pick up hitch-hickers.
If renting a vehicle abroad, always check the brakes, seatbelts, tyres, insurance and emergency procedures. Check for signs of previous damage and draw this to the attention of the rental company prior to driving off.
