About Liverpool John Lennon Airport
Liverpool Airport is one the UK's oldest airports. Originally
named Speke Airport it began flights in 1933 and for a time was
known as RAF Speke when the war interrupted its passenger services
across the Irish Sea. Major developments in 1966, for a new runway,
and 1986 for new terminal buildings, led to Liverpool Airport's
privatisation in 1990. Handling capacity was tripled in 2002
with the opening of another new terminal building. At the same
time the Airport was given a new name in honour of the founding
member of The Beatles - John Lennon.
