The Maldives |
The Maldives are found in the middle of the Indian Ocean and are made up of over 1200 beautiful coral islands; the highest point above sea level is being just 2 metres.
If you are looking for the ideal picture postcard tropical island paradise then this is it; with white sands, palm trees, clear waters and bright blue skies. Robinson Crusoe certainly wouldn’t have looked out of place! Although the main income for the Maldives is tourism, the government are very aware of the fragile nature of their home and take steps to ensure that it is not threatened. The islands offer resorts catering from everyone from backpackers to the wealthy and famous, however whilst you are free to wander around resorts and the capital city, Male, travel to smaller islands and villages is strictly controlled and normally only made available through guided tours. By monitoring tourism carefully they hope to reduce the environmental impact that it can bring. Permits to visit certain areas can be obtained through the government.
