Lapland however is not only the home to Father Christmas but
also plays host to over 500,000 reindeers, 200,000 human inhabitants
and the fantastic ‘Northern Lights’. Lapland is not
really its own country but a region in north Scandinavia belonging
to Norway , Sweden , Finland and Russia .
It is known the world over, not only for Santa Claus but its
amazing beauty: rivers, lakes, mountains, brooks, woodlands and
glaciers dotted with tiny villages. The locals are extremely
friendly and welcoming and accommodation can often be found in
log cabins with hearty food and a warming farm.
Christmas in Lapland
Obviously the greatest time of the year for tourism is the
run up to Christmas where thousands come to visit Father Christmas
and at the same time participate in activities such as snow mobiling,
husky sledding and tobogganing. At other times of the year it
is still popular with visitors who flock to go skiing, walking,
fishing, horse riding and bird watching making Lapland an ideal
place for an adventure holiday. Although there is snow between
November and May, Lapland is relatively mild during the summer
and temperatures can reach 20c. Be warned though, during the
winter months it can get as cold as -30c!
A Closer Look at Lapland
The capital city Rovaniemi makes a great base in which to explore
the surrounding areas and also offers some excellent museums.
Close by are the Ranua Wildlife Centre and the ever popular Santa
Centre and being only 5 miles from the Artic Circle means it
is just a short trip if you wish to marvel at the Northern Lights.
Lapland is also known as the ‘land of the midnight sun’ as
for 3 months between June and August the sun is permanently above
the horizon. The people celebrate the coming of the sun with
the Midsummer Festival of Light which is well worth a look.
