Lapland Day Trips

Norway | Sweden | Finland | Russia

With the advent of cheap flights one of the principal areas now benefitting from low cost flights must be Lapland.

Travel Insurance to Lapland

It is the same when everyone is having fun, it is very easy to overlook the things that might just go wrong. Good travel insurance is very important when looking to protect yourself and your family against the unknown.

Travel Insurance Direct offer great value travel insurance and winter holiday insurance policies. If you anticipate anything more wintry than a sled ride such as ice skating and skidoo riding then take out a winter holiday ski insurance. All travel and ski insurance come with full medical cover which includes medical emergency flights home together with a 24 hour emergency assistance hotline.

Lapland however is not only the home to Father Christmas but also plays host to over 500,000 reindeers, 200,000 human inhabitants and the fantastic ‘Northern Lights’. Lapland is not really its own country but a region in north Scandinavia belonging to Norway , Sweden , Finland and Russia.

It is known the world over, not only for Santa Claus but its amazing beauty: rivers, lakes, mountains, brooks, woodlands and glaciers dotted with tiny villages. The locals are extremely friendly and welcoming and accommodation can often be found in log cabins with hearty food and a warming farm.

Christmas in Lapland

Obviously the greatest time of the year for tourism is the run up to Christmas where thousands come to visit Father Christmas and at the same time participate in activities such as snow mobiling, husky sledding and tobogganing. At other times of the year it is still popular with visitors who flock to go skiing, walking, fishing, horse riding and bird watching making Lapland an ideal place for an adventure holiday. Although there is snow between November and May, Lapland is relatively mild during the summer and temperatures can reach 20c. Be warned though, during the winter months it can get as cold as -30c!

A Closer Look at Lapland

The capital city Rovaniemi makes a great base in which to explore the surrounding areas and also offers some excellent museums. Close by are the Ranua Wildlife Centre and the ever popular Santa Centre and being only 5 miles from the Artic Circle means it is just a short trip if you wish to marvel at the Northern Lights. Lapland is also known as the ‘land of the midnight sun’ as for 3 months between June and August the sun is permanently above the horizon. The people celebrate the coming of the sun with the Midsummer Festival of Light which is well worth a look.

European Health Insurance Card

Visitors with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are entitled to free emergency medical care, but this should never be used in place of comprehensive travel insurance.  For example, the EHIC does not cover travel problems such as lost or stolen luggage or property, cancellation and curtailment, and expensive matters like personal liability, legal costs, ongoing or non-urgent medical care, air ambulance and medical repatriation.
