FCO Country Advice for the Honduras
The Mayans once occupied Honduras and their culture spread
down the Yucatan Peninsula , incorporating most of Central America
. In the early 1500s Christopher Columbus landed in Honduras
and colonization by the Spanish began. Honduras eventually gained
independence in 1821
The population is mainly Mestizo (mix of European and Amerindian),
Amerindian, some blacks and some whites. The major religion is
Catholic with some Protestants. Spanish is the official language, with some Amerindian dialects also
spoken as well as English in certain areas.
The capital city, Tegucigalpa, is located in the central part
of the country and to date has few high rise buildings. The National
Museum has exhibits of many Mayan artifacts. It makes a good
starting point for a visit to Honduras as transportation to outlying
areas and islands is available and most are within reach of a
day-trip.
During colonial times the city was a centre for mining
activities. A popular area for dining and shopping is the business
area of Boulevard Morazan. The centre of the city contains many
interesting historical landmarks, including an 18 th C cathedral,
along with several good museums. |

Some other popular places to visit are Santa Lucia, Andorra,
La Vella National Park and Comayagua. Although the country has
many archeological sites and Mayan ruins, the most popular and
interesting Mayan ruins are at Copán, near the border
with Guatemala situated in a tropical forest, which adds to the
enchantment. Copán can be reached from San Pedro Sula.
Honduras is a great holiday destination for those seeking many
types of experiences. For beautiful and uncrowded beaches, the
Caribbean coast is a must-see, where there are white sandy beaches,
snorkeling and scuba diving, and relaxation is aided by island
music and plenty of rum. The Bay Islands, comprising Roatan,
Utila and Guanaja are located approx. 29 miles off the north
coast, about an hour’s boat trip from the port of La Ceiba.
There are three larger Bay Islands and the smaller of them, Utila,
is a popular place for backpackers and those wishing to scuba
dive. There are river destinations for those wanting to experience
river rafting and kayaking.
Honduras has gained a reputation as being a excellent place
to get certified for diving. The diving on the barrier reef is
reputed to be some of the best in the world, with black and multi-coloured
corals and lots of marine life, For nature lovers there are National
Parks and wildlife sanctuaries. La Tigra National Park is located
near Tegucigalpa. It is a beautiful area of lush forest where
many species of flora and fauna can be found, including orchids,
monkeys, pumas and hundreds of species of birds.
